Steel Scrap, Cast Iron Scrap, and Non-Ferrous Metals

Scrap is a material perfectly suited for recycling and reuse. Scrap materials include old machinery, steel and aluminum construction elements, profiles, cans, used rims, sheets, and heating system components. These items must be sorted into specific categories of alloy scrap. Scrap is divided into three main types: steel scrap, cast iron scrap, and non-ferrous metals (non-ferrous materials).

Scrap materials can be found in many households and businesses.

For those without experience, scrap may seem worthless, just a pile of unwanted “junk.” However, this is a misconception and an uneconomical perspective.

Scrap Transport – How Should Scrap Be Delivered?

Scrap is a material that must be transported under safe conditions. Specialized containers and delivery trucks (often vehicles with self-loading capabilities, such as HDS trucks) are designed for this purpose. Depending on the quantity of scrap being collected, professional companies can also provide containers placed at the customer’s specified location, allowing for systematic collection directly from the facility.

This system enables clients to sort their scrap themselves, increasing the value of the material sold.

Whether you have large amounts of steel scrap, cast iron scrap, or non-ferrous metals (copper, brass, lead, aluminum), it’s essential to know where your scrap is going once handed over to a third party. Remember, recycling scrap is critical because the raw materials it contains are non-renewable. Currently, only 30% of copper and aluminum and 40% of steel scrap are recycled and reused.

Scrap Transport – BDO Registration and Waste Transfer Card (KPO)

Who can transport scrap? Since January 2020, waste transport permits have been replaced by registration in the Database on Products, Packaging, and Waste Management (BDO).

Every company wanting to transport waste must have a unique registration number, which is used to verify the transporter. Companies registered in BDO are required to maintain electronic records and reports of waste management.

The BDO registry is publicly accessible, allowing you to easily check whether your transporter is registered in Section VII of the BDO database.

Additionally, transporters must have a generated confirmation or an approved Waste Transfer Card (KPO). After the waste is collected, the transporter confirms the completed transport.

What is a Waste Transfer Card (KPO)?
The KPO, generated via the BDO system, serves as proof of legally transferring waste to an authorized recipient. It is the responsibility of the waste-producing company to issue this document.

Scrap Containers – What Should You Look For?

Containers for transporting scrap must comply with DIN 30722 standards and be made from high-strength steel. There are many types of containers for transporting scrap, differing in dimensions, opening mechanisms, and purposes, such as containers designed for hook-lift trucks.

Containers placed in industrial facilities are always customized to meet the client’s specific needs.
