Scrap car batteries – where can you dispose of your old car battery?

Scrap batteries often become a hot topic during the colder months. A car battery, or vehicle accumulator, provides the necessary electrical energy to start the engine and powers various car components, which have increased with technological advancements in automobiles. During winter, car batteries are often a source of frustration. Many of us have experienced the dreaded sound of a struggling engine on a frosty morning. Sometimes, recharging the battery is enough, but at other times, it’s time to say goodbye to an old battery.

So, what should you do with this waste? Old batteries can be disposed of at Municipal Waste Collection Points (PSZOK) or designated battery recycling centers. Alternatively, you can take your used battery to a scrap yard—and even make some money in the process.

Selling old batteries at a scrap yard – what’s the price per kilogram?

The price for scrap batteries depends on the type of battery and the scrap yard’s location. Car batteries, specifically lead-acid and gel batteries, are particularly popular at scrap yards. On the other hand, larger nickel-cadmium (NiCd) batteries typically fetch a lower price. For current battery scrap prices, check online scrap price lists.

Reminder: Final pricing is determined by on-site customer service staff at the scrap yard.

Lead recovery from car batteries

Lead is the primary material used in car batteries. While lead is highly toxic, it is also highly recyclable. In developed countries, the recycling rate for lead from scrap and metal waste exceeds 70%. In Poland, the recycling rate for battery scrap is over 95%. It’s important to remember that all batteries and accumulators are classified as hazardous waste, so handling them responsibly is crucial.
